Red Floating Stick in Coolant Reservoir Housing

Does anyone know why my 2006 E90 330i doesn't have the red floating/measuring stick? I opened the reservoir housing to inspect the coolant level and of course it was low, but more suspicious to me was the fact the floating leveler wasn't there. I plan on doing a coolant flush soon, so is this something I can purchases and drop in or what do I need to do?

Should I sell my 435 for a 1M?

I got the 435 for just over a year and I must admit that I am bored of the car.



I test drove an X5M, which is a beast, but I don't think that I am ready for an SUV.



Anyway, I did some searches an noted that there a few 1Ms in our market, which I assume is due to the soon to be released M2. I test drove a 2012 alpine white with 24 000 km on the clock. The car is just brilliant! It reminds me of my E92, but it's just better.

M performance parts and lease turn in

Hey guys – I am about two years away from this question being relevant but it popped into my mind and wanted to get your feedback on it now.



So I wanted to add a couple of m performance accessories to my 328 but really didn't want to pay the up charge for the performance suspension and absolutely refused to get charged 4 hours of labor to install a muffler. Needless to say, I bought both once I took delivery of the car and had the suspension installed professionally and installed the muffler myself.



I plan on turning this car in once the lease is up and ordering either a 335 loaded or an M3. So my question is, if I no longer have the stock sport suspension and muffler, what will the dealer due to ding me when the car is turned in? The guy I work with there is a family friend so I'm wondering if there's anything he can do to help out since some of the improvements on the car obviously are not reflected in the window sticker.



Worst case I guess I can just buy the car and sell it separately...

Need advice with factory order issue. 2PW 20" M Sport wheels 469 still not available?

I'm looking for advice/help and information from the community here on an issue with my factory ordered xDrive35i.



Issue: Car arrived at dealer on 12/27 without the 2PW 20" M-sport wheels (Style 469M) I ordered. Client Advisor did not even notice this discrepancy until I arrived to inspect the car myself.



Dates:

Ordered car on 9/26.

Production slated for 10/15.

Production start was late Oct or early Nov.

Production completed 11/15.

Arrived at VDC 11/30. Held for wheel acceleration sensor campaign.

Arrived at dealer 12/27.



Explanation from my Client Advisor: BMW changed my wheels to the 19" M-sport in order to keep production going. An email (shown to me when I arrived to pickup the car) was sent to dealers informing them of this change to 600 factory-ordered vehicles. But my CA failed to notify me of this. He did not even know about the email.



I also found out that my CA ordered the car with Status 2 (Center Own Use) instead of Status 1 (Customer Sold). It is my belief that BMW changed the wheels on my car because of this.



To resolve this issue, I suggested:

1) Order the 20" Style 469M wheels and swap them onto my car. I will still pay the $950 upgrade cost.

2) Swap my 19" M-sport wheels for the 20" from one of three cars in their current lot inventory.



Sales management denied both options. They are unwilling to eat the cost of the wheel swap. The solution they offer is to reorder the car. BUT, my CA is telling me that the 2PW 20" wheels (Style 469M) are still in short supply, and even BMW does not know when they will be available again. CA claims that reordering the car will not guarantee the 2PW 20" wheels.



Question: Are the 20" 469M wheels really still that much in short supply? Such that reordering with Status 1 will not guarantee them?



I have seen others recently ordering that wheel option and even receiving their cars with the 20" wheels.



As you can imagine, I am extremely livid with the situation as I have already waited 3 months for the car, only to have it arrive without the correct specs. Worse, the CA failed to inform me of the wheel change, and has not been very helpful so far in correcting the issue.

rattling in speakers during turns

I haven't changed anything in my car but recently I can hear a rattling coming from my tweeters in the front. It becomes more notifiable on the side of the car in the direction that I'm turning (turning right I hear it on the ride front tweeter). I read somewhere people saying it could be some mounts and bmw has felted pegs of some kind. Has anyone else had or heard about this? Could it just be something lose in there or do I need to change some new pieces?

Vargas Turbo VTT Review Results After 6 months

Whats up guys? About 6 months back, I ordered the only turbo upgrade that was available for my n55. I have a bmw 135i n55 e82 6 speed manual tran FBO+meth. This would be the "N55 Stage 2 DBB Hybrid Upgrade" from VTT. Now he has other options that are easier on the wallet, but I still do not regret getting this one, as it is still the top of the line he has.

I had it shipped to my brother in the US, and he brought it on the plane with him, so that was very fortunate. As far as the installation, I had a local BMW mechanic who had years in experience, but never had installed an aftermarket turbo. He didnt want to at first, but I convinced him saying that it was a hybrid and that the install would be easy. I has to translate the entire manual, so some things got lost in translation. I want to make the review since I haven't seen many reviews for my set up and this turbo. Most people only write to complain, but when everything goes well, they forget to mention it lol. Tony was VERY helpful in every aspect. From shipping it fast so my brother could bring it, to answering a ton of technical questions I had when installing. So thanks Tony, and I hope this review helps you too. I would also like to take this opportunity to get the communities feedback by looking at my logs, etc.



Installation was not very complicated. You just have to make sure that the DV hoses and lines are plugged correctly. This is something that was lost in translation, and had to go back to fix it after we realized it. This set up was done with a BACK END FLASH with Cobb, made by Terry, and a custom map 6 also made by Terry (i am forever grateful for all his help, I feel he must hate me with all the questions i ask. the post sale support is in my opinion what makes the jb4 the best tuning tool for your bmw and mercedes)



The problem is that in Chile, we dont have e85. The max octane we can get is pump gas 97, which is equivalent to 93 in the USA. I know this turbo is meant to be used with e85 and that this way you can max out the power, but I dont have access to e85 on pump. Now i only have access to e96, because I make perfume in my country and I buy E96 ethanol, which is denatured to prevent people consuming or making alcohol with it. I am still working on the MIX, since I dont have a upgraded hpfp or anything, so I would appreciate the help.



As far as issues, I never had any issues with the turbo itself, only with small installation issues that could be due to fitment, or my mechanic. One issue I had was that the water hose coming from the new turbo was too close to the block, and it got burned. I leaked coolant for a while before realizing it was this hose. To solve this, my mechanic had to made a new nipple to change the angle of the hose, and keep it far from this area. Also changed it for a better hose with an interior and exterior that isolates the heat. This issue went on for a while, and I can finally say that my car is 100% now, which is why I doing this review now. Attached are pictures of my last log

Tinted license plates- do cops care?

This is for PA/NJ/NY cops.

Do they pull anyone over for tinted license plate covers? I'm from PA so I only have a rear plate. My car looks amazing with the dark license plate cover and PA cops don't seem to care. I go to NJ and NYC quite often though and I don't want a "fix it" ticket.

Lamin X Headlight / Tailight Tint Review With Before/After Pics

Hi All,



Just my second thread here but as my name suggests, I have an Ls1 RX7 that I built years ago and I've been playing with cars for a while.



My GF got a nice little 320i XDrive about 2 weeks ago and instead of ordering the M-Sport package, which doesn't even include the bumpers on the 320 btw, I decided that I was going to make my own with window tint, 351M wheels, rear decklid spoiler and some lightly tinted tails.

I know the wheels will help the most, but from the back these bright red big tail lights make the stock F30s look like a Camry.



I know tinted taillights are generally :thumbdown and I lived in Miami for a while where I helped plenty of friends Nightshade their Honduhs, but I noticed this product from Lamin X which claims to only block 6% of light, or essentially the same as getting 94% tint. Pretty light stuff. So I thought it might be worth a try.



My goal was OEM style aggressive. Something that you would see on an M3 or Corvette or other sports car from the factory, and I do indeed see some stock tail lights that are this dark from the factory.



Here is a before shot, that really makes the tails look darker than they are. Generally they are bright red.

First Reverse Light done. Definitely start with these, they're easy. Despite playing with cars for years I've never attempted tinting anything and I still managed to get a couple small bubbles in the first one even though it's almost entirely flat.

(Comparison stock to tinted):





The next reverse light was done in 5 minutes and was flawless, aka a little practice helped.



Now onto the curved multi-angle taillights... This is A LOT tougher. It's winter here in MA, although it's seasonably warm today at about 50 degrees, I'd suggest a summer day for best results. This material is thick vinyl. Thicker than the lamin x clear bras that go on the front of cars.



One Side Done: (This was my problem child side where I made my mistakes. A good from 5 feet job. But have probably 4 bubbles/foggy spots visible from a foot or 2 away. I'd put this on par with bad to medium quality tint shops





The other side I had learned from my mistakes and got a second person to keep the hair dryer moving as I stretched and squeegied the lights from the center out to the edges, stretching it around the compound curve as I went.

The lights actually curve in 3 different directions at one point. This is by far the most difficult part. If you've done some tint work before it will still probably require quite a bit of attention but you can probably get a perfect result. If you haven't chances are it won't be perfect. I have a few bubbles and some foggy areas that I hope will get smaller as time goes on and it cures fully. I read on laminx site that this material is actually breathable so bubbles should shrink and even dissapear. This can take up to 2 weeks, so I'm going to keep an eye on it and report back. I'll also try to get some pictures in direct sunlight.



BTW I bought the 12" x 40" size and thought I've a ton left over, but when it came down to it, I had about an inch or 2 extra. The shade again is called "Tint" don't do gunsmoke unless you want DARK lights. My GF is an exec at a big company so everything really needed to be conservative.

Just wanted to quickly get some advice on cleaning my exhaust and door interiors. I'm afraid of using the wrong product and ruining the car so wanted to get it right the first time.

This may be a silly question, but I've tried syncing my iphone with other cars like Ford or Kia via bluetooth and it is a matter of seconds to get the smartphone play music through the car, but for whatever reason, I can't find the sync button on the F15.

225/35/19 with 275/30/19

My tires in the front are 90+% thread left and the rears are to except the toe must be out of adjustment as the rear edge is almost done after only 5k miles which sucks on a brand new set of tires.



Right now i have 225/35/19 and 265/35/19 tires could i go with 275/30/19 in the rear on 230 19' rims?

Need Help Making a Decision Black or White F10

So first of all want to wish everyone here a happy holidays. Well now to my problem. Early next year most likely towards the end of February I plan to buy a f10 528i. My problem is I cannot decide between Alpine White, Carbon Black, or Black Sapphire. The other color I was contemplating was space gray, so hopefully u guys can help me out. It seems like on most of the modded 5 series on this site are either white or black which is making my decision ever harder. I do plan on doing 20" wheels with an Mtech front bumper. So I would like to get input on some people that already own this car in either black or white. Which color brings out the design of the car better, and which color shows the body lines of the car better. I have went to the dealer and seen the car in both colors in person, but that still hasn't helped. Another thing to add is that I have never had a black car before, I have had an e46 in silver, a e92 in white, and an e60 in mystic blue metallic. I think the e92 white was the hardest to keep clean the blue and silver were much easier, but the e92 white did sort of stand out at night.

bMW X4 Xdr28i VS Lexus NX200 Fsport

My wife purchased a Lexus NX200 F-Sport about two weeks before I received my X4. So, now I've had the opportunity to drive them both quite a bit and thought I would share some general comparisons. Of course this is all just my opinion.



The ride. For me, it feels like you sit in and are surrounded by the Lexus while you sit on the X4. The Lexus is more luxurious and tech heavy, while the X4 is more sporty. Even with the F-Sport, the X4 is much more fun to drive.



Power. Even though the X4 is only rated at 10 more HP, it feels much more powerful and without a doubt is much quicker. With both cars in Sport mode, the X4 will dominate the Lexus. The one positive on the Lexus is that it does somehow sound more "throaty" in sport mode. If the published times are accurate, the X4 will go from 0 to 60 one second faster than the Lexus. I wish I had a place to test the X4 on the 0-60mph because it feels like it would come in under the 6.1 seconds.



Stereo. She went option heavy on her Lexus and got the premium stereo. My X4 just has the standard stereo with HIFI option speakers. With that said, at higher volume, the X4's stereo sounds just as good as the Lexus' premium sound system. At lower volume though, the Lexus sounds better to me. I'm not sure why the X4 requires more volume to bring out the base. It is equipped with subs under the front seats, while the Lexus has one large sub in the rear of the vehicle.



Interior. I prefer the clean look of the X4's interior even with the Sensatec. The Lexus has a really fancy red/black F-sport interior.



Just for grins, I took some comparison photos. I apologize up front for the cleanliness of the cars and the photo quality.

COTA Track Day

I got to drive Circuit of the Americas so I thought I'd share my experience. It was a blast! I loved it. The track is hard on brakes so my setup was inadequate, but I still had fun. I just had to brake in stages at turn 12 to keep from overheating the brakes. The car actually warned me many times that I was braking too hard. I've never seen that before. I had no chance on the straights compared to the higher horsepower cars in the group, but I kept up well in the corners. What a fun day.

ECS Euro Headlight?

My friend wants to convert his halogens to xenons on his 2011 E90. I've done a bunch of googling and searching but I can't seem to find anything mentioning where to buy the headlights, preferably euro style. And from my understanding the adaptive ones will not work or at least require coding? That makes it sound so much more complicated, what other parts would he need?

Non-Piggyback ECU Tunes Available for F25s

Lots of buzz over in the F8x board about a Belgian company (BR-performance) claiming to have cracked the new Bosch DME. The site lists ECU tunes for many Fxx models, including X3s! Thought I'd post in the X3 forum as there has been much discussion about tunes with the recent release of the Dinantronics.



Key Figures:



35i Stage 1: 365 bhp, 383 lb-ft (peak), 840 euro

28i Stage 1: 290 bhp, 332 lb-ft (peak), 820 euro



Both of these come in below D-Tronics (the 35i by almost half) and are actual ECU re-flashes, not piggyback tunes.



Currently the only way to do this is to send your ECU in, but it looks like AMS will be the US licensee/distributor for these tunes and that any official AMS shop will be able to do these in house. Not sure on the time-frame but potentially in the next month or two. I am talking to a local tuner about this, and will pass along any info as I get it.

Need to find a local Shop for adjusting coilovers

Whatsup fellas, Im new to the BMW world, and need some info if anyone knows any good places to bring my car to have them adjust the coilovers. Long story short i just bought the car,and as i was putting on my winter wheel set up i just bought i noticed that whoever the previous owner was had installed the v2 KW coilover kit. That makes me happy in a sence that it saves me from spending $2500 on suspension. Thanks for the help

Will a tune reset zero mass/quantity adaptation values?

I have an IRAP session scheduled to reset my zero mass/zero quantity adaptation values for my injectors since I am getting these faults after a carbon cleaning.



However, I am planning to run Jarek's tune within the next few weeks.



My question is, will getting the tune reset the values? In other words, can I skip the IRAP session?





Not sure if anyone would know this, but maybe someone will chime in.

Door Ding....sooo LIVID!

SO..I have had my M4 for 6 weeks now...I park it so far away from everyone, always make sure I have ample space between cars, and check my side panels every time I get back to my car to make sure nobody hit me. I woke up this morning with a huge door ding on my driver side panel right where the line is. I am so pissed...any advice? I am going to call state farm to see if they will cover it ($100 deductible isn't bad) but how are people so selfish and stupid!

Minor upgrades?

I've been searching this forum for hours now, reading up on ecu flashes, brakes, suspension, etc. I purchased a 2009 135i m sport on Saturday, and love it. It's an automatic with the paddle shift, and it performs great. It's a blast to drive.



After all this research, I'm a tad bit overwhelmed with info and can't pinpoint what to do. The car has 65k on it- I'd like it to have some more power, possibly add a cat back exhaust system, and possibly upgraded suspension. I'd like to stay as close to stock as possible, just tweak it a bit to get a tad closer to the 1M experience, but keeping it my 135.



Any thoughts? I'm very new to this forum and these cars, so input would be fantastic. I'd like to have the car be extremely reliable, no cel, no codes, all functional- just a little bit more all around and sound a bit meaner, too 😉. Thanks in advance.

Illumination package. Is it possible?

Hi guys. I have a 118i on its basic version (1.6 twin turbo engine 170 hp automatic trans). I want to equip my car with the interior ambient lighting package (LEDs in roof and color LEDs in doors and feet spaces). I noticed that there are 2 colors available, orange and blue.

Here in Mexico my dealer is not so sure I can do that upgrade to the car. They are looking if there's a chance.

Do you know if I can do it? In your countries is an option? I have no doubts about the roof LEDs my doubt are the personalized LEDs for doors and feet panels.

Increased Battery Discharge and aftermarket installs

I have installed the following:



1. Escort Radar hardwired with laser jammers

2. OBD-2 Port bluetooth module

3. Wifi Back-up Camera



Car says Increased Battery Discharge (car is 3 years old, in South Florida, driven almost daily)



Tech at dealer states: 19442 BATTERY LIGHT IS ON. CHECKED FAULTS AND FOUND FAULTS FOR INCRASED BATTERY DISCHARGE RAN TEST PLAN FOR ENERGY DIAGNOSIS CHECKED AND FOUND THAT THE CAR HAS BEEN WOKEN UP 32 TIMES WITH AN AMP DRAW OF 80-200mA. CHECKED THE CAR FOR AFTERMARKET PARTS AND FOUND MULTIPLE PARTS. CAN NOT PERFORME CLOSED-CIRCUIT CURRENT DIAG TELL ALL AFTERMARKET PARTS ARE REMOVED. CLEARED FAULTS AND CHARGED THE BATTERY.



Nothing stays on after car is shit down (not positive about wifi camera, will double check when I get car back).



Any thoughts? No low battery power issues, just the occasional warning light in the dash.

So Ive been an M5 owner for nearly one year now and this is the first time Ive seen another M5 on the road, but I actually ending up seeing 2 in one day



The first was a MCB around the Brent Cross Area - Looked like it it had the comp pack



The second was a white m5, RKP lip, black grills etc and aftermarket alloys..



Both very nice!

Msport DCT to M3 DCT steering wheel

I've bought an M3 steering wheel, I need to get a new carbon steering trim and extended paddles off ebay but how do I fit the extended paddles onto the wheel?



Can I remove my current ones and use the bracket for the standard paddle then insert the M3 extended paddles into that? Or do I need the bracket off an M3?



I don't want to start spending more money if I haven't got everything needed to fit it.

Ignition coil part number

I have an 08 N54 135i and I'm planning on replacing the spark plugs and coils but am confused about the correct coil part number. RealOEM lists the Delphi 12138616153 part which looks very different than the current Bosch coils. I ordered this kit from ECS and it has the part number 0 221 504 464-076. Where does that version sit in the coil revision lineup?



This post from Aug 2014 lists both the 0 221 504 464/00124 and 0 221 504 407/00044 as current so I'm confused.

1st time DCT users

Among new M3/M4 owners, if this is your first DCT, what do you think and are you glad you chose it? I've always had manuals but decided to give this a shot and although I very much dig the speed, smoothness etc., there are a couple of things that are hard to get used to. Specifically, when backing up my driveway into my garage I'm pretty sure the clutches are slipping (they kinda have to be) just like I would with a stick. More frequently though, when stuck in traffic, before the clutch decides to let go, it has to be slipping there as well. I'm fairly confident the Germans have this dialed in but I'm curious about other owners perceptions.



Rolling backwards when in "drive", that I can get used to.

Automatic Windshield Wipers- Frustrating!

Now that it's winter the wipers are essential!



This experience comes from our 2011 1M and now the 2014 M235i.



So we set the auto wipers on the RH stalk to "on"; they sweep (good); then we wait for them to sweep again as the water builds up on the windscreen but - no sweep- and then after visibility is very compromised they sweep again. Adjusting the wheel on the stock seems to make no difference to the sensitivity of the wipers to do their job. These wipers, on auto, seem to have a mind of their own!



Other vehicles (Toyota Tacoma) have simpler systems - wipers on and turn wheel on stalk to get 4 different timings of the sweep (from slow to fast). BMW wipers, on auto, are too smart for their own good and seem useless - even dangerous (obscured visibility). VERY FRUSTRATING!



What are your experiences with these wipers on our cars?

Rumor: F1 to scrap current turbo V6 rules for 2016

"F1 is now speeding towards yet another new set of engine regulations.



On Thursday at a Geneva meeting of the Strategy Group, Bernie Ecclestone proposed to scrap the current turbo V6 rules.





Michael Schmidt, of the respected German trade magazine Auto Motor und Sport, said that although his proposal did not produce a "definitive result", the sport is now headed towards an all-new set of regulations for 2016.



"The engines are to be louder, more powerful and cheaper," said Schmidt on Friday.



"The goal is 1000 horse power and a cost of 10 million euros per team. An expert group must deliver results (on the proposal) by the end of January," he added.



It is now too late, however, to make significant changes to the 2015 rules, which will be almost identical to the turbo V6 formula that saw Mercedes cruise dominantly to the title this year.



Geneva, however, did produce one or two rule tweaks for 2015.



Recently, when Korea was surprisingly added to the 2015 schedule, it was said Ecclestone had done it as a mere trick to give every driver an extra engine to use throughout next season.



But on Thursday, that loophole was closed and - regardless of whether 20 or 21 races are ultimately held next year - each driver will be limited to just 4 engines for the 2015 season as originally intended.



Schmdit said the tweak was made because the extra engine would have cost already struggling teams up to an extra 800,000 euros."

Coding: Enabling a beep upon locking the car?

Has anyone found a way to make the car "beep" either an electronic sound (preferably) or the horn when you lock the car?



I find it's quite ambiguous as whether I've locked it or not, especially since now I've coded the MMI to turn off when I open the door.

Wheels have been my year-round daily wheels for about 30k miles. Some curbing on the passenger side wheels, both front and rear that I've touched up (see pics). They look great to me eye from about 6-8 feet out, but if you get in closer and look you can definitely see the curbing, scratches, etc.



Tires are Hankook Ventus V12 in 235/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear. The rears are due to be replaced because of to camber wear. The front passenger tire has a small puncture in the sidewall and does not hold air, will also need to be replaced. The drivers front tire has a bit of tread left, but if it were me I'd probably replace all four tires.



Wheels come with everything shown including wheels, tires, BMW center caps, and TPMS on all four.
