First, I adore my car. I don't expect perfection for what I paid for the car.
I have the Continental all-weather 17's on my red girl. A couple of months after I took delivery, I started getting occasional audible vibration from the plastic bit at the top of the steering column. I also had the brake booster recall pending, so I put up with it until it was time to get the recall done. It got a bit worse over time, to the point where I was getting a bit annoyed.
My dealership is top-notch, and the service department is great. They took care of the recall, did all their checks, and then attempted to find the vibration. They couldn't. It boggled my mind a bit, since it was a constant thing, but I agreed to see if it was gone. And it was.
They only did three things to the car. The recall, software updates, and they "reset" the pressure on my tires. I check my tire pressure on a weekly basis and didn't realize that they had set them to 38 psi until several days after the service. Considering the door jam sticker says 32, I put them back down to 34. I didn't drive on the highway for a few days but when I did, my annoying vibration was back.
I've been really busy lately, so I didn't really put two-and-two together for a few weeks. I was deeply annoyed at the dealership for not finding the vibration. It didn't occur to me that LOWERING the pressure on tires could do this. I've absolutely never experienced a tire that causes more vibrations at lower pressure. Tire noise is louder with higher pressure, but the cabin vibrations are gone. Six of one, half dozen of the other...
So freakin' weird. Has anyone else experience this? I've been thinking about putting summer shoes on her and this might be another good reason to do it. I haven't popped a tire in about 22 years, so I'm not too afraid of letting go of the RFT's.
I'd really like to know if anyone else has had a similar experience.
