M235i P3 Vent Gauge (VIDI)

mercredi 8 octobre 2014

Hey all, I just want to share my experience with the P3 VIDI Gauge.

Whenever I want a whole lot of info on how my car is running with the JB4, I just connect my tablet and have a lot of metrics at my disposal. However, there are those times when I don't want to bother with that and just would like to see some vital info, like oil and coolant temps, boost and ait. As you all know, we get none of that from BMW. I want to see this info without having to install any unsightly modification to my dash and/or invest a grand for equivalent solutions.

In comes the P3 VIDI gauge to fill that gap. It fits right into the OEM driver side vent and still allows you to direct airflow up or down, left or right. It was important to me to maintain some airflow from the vent as opposed to sacrificing one entire vent (as competitors products do). I am interested in number values, so the small screen of the P3 suffices.

It is a very easy installation for users without the JB4. Simply undo plastic trim on the left of the dashboard, pop off the OEM vent, pop in the P3 gauge in it's place and tuck in the control box and all cables in behind it. Then just route the main connector down to the OBD2 port and plug in. Some initial config and you're good to go! P3 has solid videos showing all of this, exclusively on the M235i.

If you have a JB4 you will need to run a wire to the JB4 harness that taps into the MAP sensor signal to be able to pick up correct Boost reading. This is because both the JB4 and P3 get data from the canbus. The JB4 uses up a lot of the available bandwidth and won't play nice with other devices leeching info at the same time. Again, don't fret about tapping into wires, the one wire you are tapping into is the JB4 harness, so no stock harnesses are tampered with. I ran the wire to the engine bay through the firewall by using the hole that the hood latch release goes through.

Very happy thus far. It looks and feels OEM and more importantly it gives me those important metrics on the fly that I was looking for. Apart from reading the standard OBD2 port info (air intake temp, battery voltage, egt, oil temp, coolant temp, etc.) it will also read/clear codes, has a shift light function and even has a built-in 0-60 timer mode.

Here are some pics and a few videos to give you a feel for the gauge.
