road tax, do you automatically get refund ?

ill be selling my work van in the next few weeks. I only retaxed it for a year from start of october, so no tax disc.

Can someone advice me what happens with the new tax when you sell the vehicle? does the change of ownership with dvla automatically refund the tax to original owner? and at what point does the new owner need to tax it?
