Also posted in general e90 board but thought I'd put here for any uk experience.
Hi All,
Events that have taken place:
1. YELLOW engine temperature. Drove 5 miles to destination. Topped up BMW coolant (first time since ownership of 14 months therefore assumed it needed a top-up).
2. Drove a few short trips, no lights.
3. YELLOW engine temperature shortly followed by RED version. Pulled over, foolishly opened reservoir, coolant spewed out everywhere as expected. Refilled without knowledge of bleed valve and set off.
4. YELLOW engine temperature shortly followed by RED version within a mile. Stopped, called recovery who arrived an hour later. Started engine, topped up with water whilst bleeding, can see water being pumped back from inlet to reservoir tank, no leaks present. Noted as air lock, reached home safely.
5. Two further incidents of YELLOW engine temperature shortly followed by RED version within 5 miles. On both occasions, with car off, opened bleed valve then managed to open reservoir cap. Started car, float drops then comes up and water overflows out this occurs 2/3 times. Once this stops, filled with water, watched water being pumped back in, waited for air bubbles to disappear & float at max before closing bleed valve & cap.
6. Started car from cold on drive, after 10 mins, inlet is hot whilst outlet is slightly warm and able to pinch.
No error codes at all (read using ELM327 wifi connector & EngineLink app)
Potential causes:
Water Pump Doubtful given water is being pumped back in after every incident. Could it be intermittent failure?
Thermostat Very likely. Could be closed however does not explain why water is pumping around after every incident, surely needs to be open to do this?
Coolant temp sensor Only came across this yesterday so dont know how to diagnose this.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated as I want to fix this myself this weekend whilst kids are away!
Thanks in advance.
